Black pool pebbles are all the rage. They are popping up everywhere: images in upscale landscaping magazines, ads on your local home improvement store’s website, and beautifully laid out around your neighbor’s pool. But do you know the true color of these little smooth stones? A hint: it is not true black.
Black Pool Pebbles or Blue Pebble Stone?
One question our customers ask often is: what is the darkest color of Mexican pool pebbles? The answer is not as simple as it might seem. Yes, many people say that black pool pebbles are the darkest and best. However, there is no such thing as truly black beach pebbles in nature. They are all shades of grey: from the darkest grey to lighter grey.
To make this story even more interesting, natural Mexican beach pebbles have bluish undertones. This means that they can appear light blue in certain light conditions. Or black – especially when covered with water, washed, or sealed. The surrounding landscape also affects the perceived color: light or dark plants, real or artificial turf, sand or other stone material. Every detail in your landscape affects all others, and the overall look can change dramatically.
Do You See Grey Pebbles in This Picture?
This is actually a trick question. These are the same pebbles as in the photo above. The dramatic color difference is due to the different time of day, and the fact that pebbles are dry in this photo. Water affects the color of pebbles dramatically. Black pool pebbles will look light grey when they are dry.
The change of color actually mimics natural processes. During the day beach pebbles absorb sunlight: they heat up and retain warmth. During the evening hours, pebbles gradually release the heat energy and cool off. This process affects the the color we perceive. As they say: beauty (and color) is in the eye of the beholder. In addition, it helps to regulate the surrounding temperature, which can help plants in hot climates to survive summer’s brutal heat.
