Landscaping with Beach Pebbles in the Northeast – Special Considerations for New York City

Here at BMBP we have many years’ experience shipping our Mexican pebbles all over the United States, including all of the Northeastern states. Sometimes our New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Virginia landscape pebble customers ask us: how will Mexican pebbles hold up in the harsh Northeastern climate? After all, winters in these states are a lot colder than those at the sunny beaches of Mexico. The short answer: Mexican beach pebbles (locally known as river rock) do just fine in the Northeast. We invite you to read our slightly longer answer below.

Mexican Landscaping Pebbles: Effect of Temperature Changes

A winter in New Jersey or New York often brings freezing temperatures that might give way to somewhat warmer weather, thus causing the dreaded melting and freezing of snow and ice. While this can cause a lot of damage to garden pottery, outdoor metal décor, and wooden structures, the changing temperatures will not damage your Mexican beach pebbles.

The great feature of most any landscaping rock is that it is rock and thus practically indestructible. Rain, wind, temperature changes, and direct aggressive sunlight will do nothing to change the look of pebbles. However, there is one important exception! If you install polished Mexican beach pebbles outdoors, they will be affected. The polish might crack and fade, and pebbles might look discolored. A solution is simple: choose natural beach pebble rock for all your outdoor landscaping projects.

Landscaping in the Northeast: Fall Leaves and Blowers

People in the Northeast are blessed to be able to observe the stunning fall foliage and numerous colors of Mother Nature. However, there is a downside: all those leaves eventually have to be disposed of. A blower can be an indispensable tool to help with this task. Sometimes our customers ask if the leaf blower will blow away or mess up their carefully installed beach pebbles. Again, the short answer is “no.”

Our Mexican river rock is heavy enough to withstand the strong wind effect created by a leaf blower. Unless you get very small pebbles (such as Mexican pool pebbles smaller than ½”) you should be able to use your leaf blower without any restrictions.

New York City: Beach Pebble Delivery and Installation Considerations

We often ship our river rock to customers in New York City. Our landscape stone has been used everywhere from decorative walkways to Manhattan rooftop gardens, to large commercial buildings, and hospitals. We have a lot of experience delivering to NYC, and we can check on any freight restrictions and arrange all of the delivery details for you. Many customers are relieved to learn that usually the freight / delivery does not require any cumbersome special arrangements.

To make installations in New York City easier, we offer to split our super sacks in half, with each sack holding 1,500 lbs of Mexican river rocks / beach pebbles. This makes it easier to move pebbles to the desired installation location, and makes life a lot easier for customers who wish to install beach pebbles on rooftops or other elevated spaces.

If a 1,500 lbs bag is still too heavy, we also offer to bag our beach pebbles in any size poly bags. If you are interested in this option, please contact us to discuss the details.
